Languages

Perhaps you would like to refresh what you learnt at school, you are looking to keep up your conversational skills, or maybe you simply want to improve your vocabulary ready for a holiday abroad. Whatever the reason, we offer a growing opportunity within the u3a to practise your language skills. At present, we have four language groups:

  • French: a well-established and sociable group who share a love of the French language
  • German: a new group that started in 2023 and which is already thriving
  • Spanish: our newest group aimed at those interested in Spanish language, life and culture
  • Italian: we are offering a new “holiday Italian”  conversation group starting in April

Our groups usually meet once a fortnight for an hour or more. The emphasis is on conversation – both listening and speaking – using books, articles and podcasts to provide a focus for the conversation. We also try to weave in a sense of the life and culture of the country concerned. And there is always room for fun with games and quizzes!

Most groups can accommodate a range of skill levels although they cannot generally accept beginners without any prior knowledge of the language. We like to include everyone if possible so please contact the convenor to see if their group is right for you.
