Walks

Walking is a popular activity amongst Salford u3a members. It is a great way to make new friends, explore our local countryside, and get some valuable exercise in the fresh air. We offer a range of walking opportunities so there should be something for everyone from beginners to more experienced walkers. Some walks are local, others involve travel further afield but we operate informal car-sharing so transport should not present a problem for anyone wishing to join us.

Our main walking groups meet on alternate Mondays and there are three to choose from:

Local walks: these are afternoon walks within half an hour’s drive and typically around 3 miles in length. They are gentle (with little ascent) and normally last 1 to 2 hours

Short walks: again these are half-day afternoon walks over about 3 to 4 miles. They are on good paths but may involve short moderate uphill climbs

Long walks: these longer full day walks covering 5 to 7 miles. They are relatively gentle, predominantly on flat ground involving little ascent

In addition, we have a new Strollers group for those who prefer short, gentle walks at weekends, typically around the parks of Salford.

If you would like to join any of these groups please do contact the appropriate group convenor in the first instance. We do have space for new members but do need to limit the number of walkers so that groups are of manageable size. The group convenor can also advise you about the sort of clothing/footwear you will need for the walks.

We are not able to accommodate dogs on these walks, but if you do like to walk with your dog then try our Walking with Dogs group.

Walking holidays

We also arrange a walking holiday each year over four to five days. In the past, we have walked from Sedbergh on the border between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, from Malham in the Yorkshire Dales themselves, and from Alnwick on the Northumbrian coast. We stay in country houses which cater especially for walking groups, and are perfectly located in areas where there is plentiful opportunity for scenic walking. In 2023, we are returning to Dovedale in Derbyshire.
