We are an enthusiastic group of people who gather together to read plays, some of them by great writers, others by less well-known authors.

We are currently reading:

The Haunting of Hill House by Andrew Leslie

Adapted from a gothic horror novel by Shirley Jackson, Hill House is set in a remote location and has a forbidding and sinister reputation. Its isolation is broken by Dr. Montague, an investigator of supernatural phenomena, who has invited Theodora, Eleanor and Luke to join him….

Reading “The Importance of being Earnest” (March 2023)

We have in the past read plays by John Osborne, Terence Rattigan, Michael Frayn, Mike Harding and Alan Ayckbourn. Our recent readings have included:

Saturday Night at the Crown by Walter Greenwood

A comedy set in a north country pub on a Saturday evening with a cast of colourful characters

Proscenophobia by Bettine Manktelow

A play set in the dressing room of an actress and her understudy – rivals who have both been married to the same man

One for the Pot by Ray Cooney and Tony Hilton

A typical Whitehall farce with a seemingly endless string of mistaken identities and hilarious confusion. Premiered at the Whitehall Theatre, London in 1961 starring Brian Rix and Terry Scott and ran until 1964.

Who Dies Wins by Seymour Matthew

This comedy thriller is a story of hidden identities,  marital deception and twisted quotations from Shakespeare – and in a brilliant coup de theatre the audience gets a major clue to the solution well before anyone else.

One for the Pot by Ray Cooney and Tony Hilton

The plays are normally selected by the leader of the group but suggestions from other members are welcome.

If you enjoy creating an atmosphere akin to that created on the radio why not join us? You will receive a very warm welcome.

Venue and Time: We meet at Winton Library at 1:30-3pm on alternate Fridays.

There is a small charge (£2.00 per person) for each session to cover the cost of room hire.

Please contact Pat for further information.

We are very grateful to Ian at Winton Library for his help in obtaining plays for us.  It is not always easy and his resourcefulness is much appreciated.
